My Autobiography

Hi! My name is Richard. Some call me Dick, Honey, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Uncle and a few other things I won't mention.

I came to Chicago in 1943 when I was thirteen from Toledo Ohio where I lived most of my younger life with my Grandma, Mother and two sisters.... About a year after moving to Chicago I met twin brothers, who became my life long friends, I'll call them Bob and Jim. We always had good times together hanging around most of our teen years doing about anything that foolish teenagers do. We also did a lot of model airplane building. We had great fun back then. My two best friends are now gone. Bob, was the last to go at the end of 2008.

I always liked building model airplanes, solid and flying models. Later I flew radio control model airplanes for about fifteen years. I also loved photography. I bought my first camera at age eleven for 49 cents. I still have two pictures of my Mother taken in 1940 with that 49 cent camera . At sixteen I purchased a used camera at (Mages) a sporting goods store at 62nd and Halsted in Chicago for $15. It was an Argus C3 a 35mm film camera. With a makeshift closet darkroom I made my own prints. One day Bob watched the developing process and was just amazed at seeing images appearing right before his eyes. It wasn't long after that Bob became interested in the hobby and bought a camera. Bob and I took many pictures together all over , mostly in the Chicago area.

I bought a 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Bush Pressman sheet film camera before moving up to a 4x5 Speed Graphic. I took lots of pictures with both of those cameras and still had the Speed Graphic when I got drafted into the Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. I spent most of my time in Germany as a First Division Signal Company Photographer. I guess I had it made so to speak as most of my photo work was for P.I.O.(Public Information Office) for Headquarters Company.

While in Germany I purchased a German Camera , a (Primarflex II), a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 single lens reflex with a Carl Zeiss Tessar 170mm lens. I still have that camera but it's not in working order.

After my tour of duty I went back to my job at Recordak (a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak Co.). It was there I met this young lady, Shirley and about a year later we were married.
We bought a house in Calumet City and during the 6 years living there we had four children. I was taking pictures with the Speed Graphic and a 35mm Miranda film camera at that time. We then bought a house in Midlothian and had another two children making a total of two boys and four girls, boy! what a wild life that was but looking back it was really a great time in my life.

After 16 years, our marriage broke up leaving me to raise our six children. Some of the older ones helped with the younger ones so all was not bad. I continued taking pictures of all the kids. I had purchased a 35mm Nikon F2S film camera in 1974 and just kept snapping pics. I really liked that camera and still have it after all those years and it still works.

After being divorced four years I met the love of my life and the Angel of my dreams, Her name is Elinor but I call her "Ellie". She had four boys of her own but that didn't matter as love is blind you know. We got married and sold the house in Midlothian a year later and moved to our present house in Downers Grove and are living here to this day 29 years later. We will celebrate our 30Th wedding anniversary next spring of 2009.

I'm still taking lots of pics. of all the children, many grandchildren and great grand children. After retiring the Nikon film camera I went Digital. I now take most of my pictures with a Canon Powershot Pro.1 and a Canon XSi DSLR.

The most disheartening part of our life was losing two of my daughters in their early middle age. Laurel passed away about 7 years ago at the age of 43. Our youngest, Vicky just passed away October of this year 2008, she was just 41.... It's just not supposed to happen this way, the children going before their parents. The only relief we have is knowing their souls are with God now.

I suppose life goes on even with the emptiness and part of our life being gone. Now all we can do is cherish the memories and the many photos, movies and videos that keep those memories alive.

I will just keep loving my angel Ellie with the rest of our children and keep on taking pictures until it's my time to go.

Happy New Year to all despite all the sad memories. Two thousand eight was a very bad year for our family. I hope and pray that 2009 will be a fruitful and healthy year for all.

On April 2009 I lost my older sister to Alzheimer's disease. She was 88, going to be 89 in September. She was in a nursing home for about a year and a half. She was a great sister and our family will miss her. She died peacefully and without pain. It was hard on the family though, seeing her deteriorate over such a short period of time. My niece Mary and daughter Linda came with us to visit her a few times before her passing. Once again we have many photos and videos to keep our memories of her alive. ..... Rest with God, Genie.

The date is October 3rd 2009 and I'm a year older..... If you don't know my age, I won't tell. Things will never get back to normal after our loss last year and the early part of this year but  life must go on,... so they say.

I am feeling older as my back is sending me the message every morning and during the day.

Had a grand-daughter and her family move down to Texas. Ellie and I sure miss that part of our family. Our great grand-daughter and New great grandson was part of that family, so we will miss out of their growing up. At least our grand-daughter and grandson are posting pictures on Face Book. That way we can see and enjoy their beautiful faces as they grow up.

It has been rather quite lately and I like it that way.

I'm getting back to one of my old hobbies of Model RC airplane flying. I do need the exercise of walking more and that is one way of getting it. So toddle-loo all till next time.

We're in the 3rd month of 2010 and it seems as we get older we lose more of our friends and relatives. On February 27 my wife lost her Aunt Vera at 79. It seems that every month we lose someone. Three weeks ago Ellie lost one of her good friends. I suppose it will finally end when it's our turn to go.

We had four new Great Grand children born in 2010.
Jan. 2010, Makayla
June 2010, Livia
July 2010, Victoria
Sep.,2010, Connor
Wow! what a busy year for Kelly, Terra, Rose and Sara.

On the lighter side. I revived one of my old hobbies of radio control model airplane flying as mentioned above. I'm a little nervous about flying as I hadn't flown a plane for 19 years. As the weather gets better I will be brave and give it another try. It's now the 1st of March and the weather in the Midwest should be getting better, we shall see.

We're now in August 2010. How the time flies as we get older. This year we have the good fortune of having two new grand children. Terra our grand daughter In Texas gave birth to a baby girl in July and recently gave us a visit. And our grand daughter in Illinois gave birth to a lovely girl also. We plan on seeing her soon. We also have a grand daughter expecting in September of this year 2010. Wow.... We have a lot of grand children and great grand children. Will it ever end, NO, we hope not.

Still flying RC airplanes and getting the old know how back but very slowly. I usually go to the flying field on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weather willing. Other retired club fliers meet and fly on those days, spring, summer, fall and winter. We all have a good time telling jokes and talking about older times, and general ratchet-jawing. Oh yes! we still fly a little.

We had a fair year in 2010 and it's now 2011. As we get older it seems all years repeat themselves in a lot of ways. We seem to go to more Wakes and funerals, sad but true. My angel Ellie lost her aunt Dorothy Olund and one of her best friends Joan Doherty. They were my friends also. We have many good memories of them both. Ellie also lost some of her church friends. It seems all we have is memories now.

I'm still flying radio control planes when the weather lets me. I'm planing on purchasing a new model next week 2,2,2011. Our club meetings are once a month now.

Still taking pictures with my Canon DSLR. I bought a Canon 3100s for my Angel Ellie.
She took some pictures at Christmas time.

I still think a lot of my deceased daughters, Laurel and Vickie and continually pray for them as I do for all my family past and present. I sure miss them. Now I worry about Cathy, my third daughter. She called yesterday 1,24 and we talked awhile. There has to be something going on that I'm not aware of but have that bad feeling. I hope I'm wrong. When Ellie goes somewhere I worry every minute she's gone. That surely has to be the sign of old age.

I still feel fairly well health wise but still remember what my Sister Virginia said. "wait till you reach 80 when everything hurts". She was right on. Ellie and I try to exercise by walking any chance we can, usually at the big stores. Ellie tries to get 8000 or more steps a day. Our Pedometer is our guide.

I hope all our family stays well in 2011 and it's a best year ever. We love you all.

It's a week after Thanksgiving 2011. We had 27 over here for Thanksgiving. Ellie worked so hard cooking for all. I told her we're getting too old for this large get-together and perhaps this year will be our last. Maybe a much smaller group next year. Nothing really bad or exciting happened this year. That could be a good or bad thing. All in all I think it went pretty well.

I'm still flying RC and enjoying the fellowship with My new friends I made and still try to get out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The weather is pretty good so far, however winter is just around the corner but that won't stop me flying on the better days.

I got a call from Cathy last week and she sounded bad. Her words were a little slurred. I think she dialed me by mistake. The conversation was OK I Suppose.

We're getting closer to Christmas now and a New Year.... Wow! how fast the time goes when we get older. We read the Sunday paper Sunday morning and it seems we're reading the Sunday paper again two days later.

It's strange, when I was a young boy time couldn't go fast enough. Now it seems to just fly by. Perhaps we can slow 2012 a little and still be rather healthy.

At ending this part of my Biography, I still miss my Daughters, Laurel and Vickie and still think of them over and over. I know that all of the family and friends reading this that knew  them miss them and think of them also.

Wow! How the time flies, It's already March 31, 2012 and I suppose all is well as can be. I miss my 2 daughters more than ever but do watch the DVDs I made of them quite often now. Seeing them in their growing years does bring tears to my eyes but also brings me closer to all the good memories of them. I don't ever want to lose those memories,
.

Ellie and I are still in fairly good health. My niece Mary came down with breast cancer and had to have her left breast removed, She's recovering and doing fine.

We had a nice visit from our Granddaughter Terra, Ekic and family from Texas. Terra Is pregnant with her fourth child, wow! that means another great grandchild, great!

We had St Patricks lunch a day early with our good friend Russ in New Lennox and all went fine. Russ was very happy and he told us of all his old flying stories from WW2.
Ellie's Uncle Richie had lunch with us on St Patricks day. We had corned beef and cabbage on both days and more WW2 stories of his Army days.

The weather has been pretty bad for flying lately so I have been working on My HO model RR. I cleaned up the room and painted the floor, replaced my work table, bought a new Locomotive and Power supply. I also worked on the Koi pond and outdoor RR a little. I do have lunch with my flying friends often and go to the field to ratchet jaw about airplanes or just about anything else that comes up, but for now..... Time for a nap........ talk to you later.

Well,it's another year and I'm still here Thank God. We're coming to the end of 2013 so I thought I should update the happenings. 2013 started out OK, My Angel Ellie and I are still in pretty good health but still remember the ones we lost. this year was another sad one as we lost our first granddaughter, Michelle, my son, Mark's daughter. She was only 31 years old, a sad day for all the Family, we will miss her and pray for her. We also had a scary time when Ellie's son, Randy, collapsed and had to be in I.C.U for three weeks. He is fine now and getting back to normal. Ellie lost a few church friends one of the bad things about getting older but Life goes on like I said before. One of the better things that happened in our life is Our granddaughter, Terra, gave birth to a healthy handsome boy. She named him Lucas. Terra and Erik have four children now.

Our Granddaughter, Terra and Family moved back here to Chicago, IL that's a good thing. Perhaps we'll see them more often. She now has four children. We have so many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren we can't keep up with all the strange names. At least their strange to us.

It's three days before Christmas. My son, Mark and Laura invited us over for Christmas Eve. Christmas morning we will see my Stepson Jim and the His four Children for a while and then drop off  at Randy's for awhile and then on to Ellie's sister's  in Skokie for Christmas Day. I know we'll be very tired when we return home but I'm sure we'll have a good time. Without too many details, that's about all until 2014, God willing.

I received My new Canon EOS 6D and a 24-70mm F/4L usm lens, probably my last camera I'll ever own and that's alright with me. The weather has been so bad I haven't been able to do anything except snow blow. We have a record winter this year. Ellie and I had real bad colds and are just getting over them.

I miss hearing more from my children and know they have busy lives but feel they could call more often. I do hear from my son mark often and also our grandchild  Kevin, he's the greatest. Can't wait until this winter is over. I love Spring and hope to take lots of pictures.

Well, here it is , almost 2015. Where did the summer go, It seemed to fly by.  It seems as I get older the time goes so fast, unlike the slower time when I was younger. I always say, slow down, slow down.

We lost a few more friends in 2014. That's a big problem with getting old, a sad thing. We just went to a memorial for Ellie's church friend yesterday. She was about 3 months younger then me.

I'm still taking pictures and flying RC airplanes but haven't flown for the last few weeks because of bad weather, speaking of witch, I just purchased a new model plane yesterday, one that was on backorder the last few months.

It seems as I get older I tire of the many good times and get-togethers I used to have. We had our last thanksgiving here after all these years. The families are getting to large and I really can't put up with the kids and cleanup. Perhaps we can have small gatherings where we can talk and visit more. My daughter left without saying good by. I don't know where I was at the time, that's the problem with large gatherings.

It's December 12th, 2014 and our Flying club's dinner is this Saturday at White Fence Farm. Before we know it 2015 will be here. I hope I can be less depressed with everything. The problem is I worry about everything now, especially the family. My family and friends are in my prayers almost every night, what more can I say or do. I certainly hope and pray that 2015 will be better.

That's all for now, hope to see and write to all in 2015.
